After the devastating
loss of her Thoroughbred horse, Sage, eighteen year old Brittany Rostron
of Valley Stream wanted his name to be remembered forever which began
the idea of “Project Sage” (Save A Grateful Equine), a rescue
program dedicated to saving horses from slaughter.
Project Sage attends the New Holland auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania
and other auctions to rescue horses where they are put under contract
so they will never face the danger of going to another auction ever again.
When Project Sage rescues a horse, they are sent to Another Chance 4 Horses,
also located in Pennsylvania, where they are evaluated, rehabilitated
and placed into a forever loving home where they live a healthier and
happier life.
Every kind of horse under the sun can be found at auctions. “These
are our pets, champion show jumpers and race horses. They all end up at
the auction which is mostly dumping grounds for unwanted horses,”
said Rostron, Co- President of Project Sage. The most common reason for
horses going to auction is because their owners can no longer afford their
upkeep or they just simply don’t care about them anymore.
At the site, horses vary from fat, healthy horses to sick, skinny horses.
. “Some horses are extremely ill and skinny beyond anyone’s
imagination… it is hard to not leave the auction with a sick stomach,”
Rostron admits.
Project Sage rescues as many horses as they can per trip since rescuing
such animals is an expensive process. As far as fundraising goes, Project
Sage sells candy bars at local train stations, gratefully collects used
horse goods as well as selling riding gloves, organizes garage sales and
Chinese Auctions, and financial donations from anyone who wishes to donate.
“I know Sage will lead the way,” said Rostron “I want
to help as many horses as I can in my life”. Recently, nineteen
year old Nicole Rose joined Brittany as a partner for her rescues of Project
Sage. Rostron’s goal is to teach everyone about the cruel industry
of horse slaughter since many do not realize what actually happens and
to open her own rescue facility within the next five to ten years.
Brittany and Nicole are confident that together, they will continue to
save the lives of these beautiful animals as their organization grows.
As their motto states, “Making a difference, one horse at a time”,
they know their dedication will actually make a difference.
